Our Emphasis Breaststroke

Our emphasis is on having fun, making friends, and being a team member while becoming physically fit!

Our History

Officially, the swim club was initiated by a couple of parents from the Town of Cochrane in the early 1990's. The club was incorporated as a non profit society April 5, 1993.

There have been a number of different coaches but for the last number of years, Suzanne Gaida and Patti Coddere. Recently, Jesse Coddere has come aboard and has helped coach the developmental groups.

We do one swim a thon a year with the swimmers in the Black Squad reaching 300 lengths in 2 hrs. In 2006, the total distance, by all swimmers, was 4356 laps which is 108.9 km WOW. Our one large fund raiser is raffle tickets. As of the last two years, we have raffled off West Jet vouchers and a gift basket. This is a worthy fund raiser for us. Approximately every 2 years we do a Casino which is a substantial boast to our cash flow. We also sell IGA and Safeway Coupons.

The entire executive is volunteer with many parents being on the board since the very beginning holding various positions.

We have had one swimmer so far go to Nationals and that was Cam Jagaer 2004/05 season.

About the Comets

The Cochrane Comets Winter Swim Club provides an opportunity for each age group swimmer to achieve their maximum swimming potential. Competitive swimming is the amateur sport that allows athletes to use their aquatic skills in competition with others. Like other sports, competitive swimming offers athletes the opportunity to compete against club members and other swim teams throughout the swim season.

Ages

  • Our programs are available for the ages of six all the way up to late teens.

  • We keep our training groups small and our swimmer to coach ratio low.

Our Season

Our season begins in September and is eight to eleven months long depending on the age and ability of each swimmer.

Skills

  • For each swimmer to progress, a program of appropriate physical conditioning and technical stroke development is necessary.

  • It is our goal that each swimmer be provided with a valuable and rewarding swimming experience.

  • To meet these needs, the Comets have a program consisting of several levels of instruction. The coaches shall assess each swimmer and determine which program the swimmer is most suited for.
